This self employed number includes people who owned commercial farms, family businesses and shopkeepers. When the Industrial Revolution came, these numbers quickly reversed. For most of the last century in America 80% of people were workers while only 20% were self-employed.

Shockingly, those numbers are now changing again. Because of the Great Recession, (what many people are now calling this economic state that we’re currently in,) employers are laying off more people than ever and these people are finding new opportunities for freelancing. Even before the Great Recession, a government statistic showed over one third of Americans were ‘contingently employed’ (That’s the government fancy word for freelancing.) that number is currently growing more every day as shown by famous job freelancing site Elance. Their job postings for freelancers increased 52% in a single year.

Read More:

http://www.freelancemachine.com/2011/08/23/freelancing-jobs/

Importing your contact list into Linkedin

How to import up to 3000 contacts into linkedIn.

Video: http://www.acceleratedfreelance.com/2011/06/12/marketing-with-linkedin/

Google Rankings Pie Chart

An illustration depicting Google’s ranking algorithm. Good luck. National Opt-Out Day begins Wednesday morning at 70 airports. Organizer Brian Sodergren, who Time magazine said is not flying on Thanksgiving, is asking travelers to opt out of the full body scans and instead ask TSA officials for an enhanced pat-down. That’s right; Brian wants you to get groped. Time is saying the protest could cause massive delays, so arrive at the airport early. Despite the negative attention — which Daily Beast media critic Howard Kurtzman blames on media frenzy — nearly two-thirds of Americans support full body scans, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll. Which brings us to “Blogger Bob,” the person (or persons) behind TSA’s Twitter account. He’s been posting light-hearted tweets linking to travel tips and responding to the piles of negative criticism. And guess what. He says he likes it. “It’s not that bad actually…It’s a challenge. I dig it,” he tweeted. In addition, we were sued by a group of Buzz users and recently reached a settlement in this case.
The settlement acknowledges that we quickly changed the service to address users' concerns. In addition, Google has committed $8.5 million to an independent fund, most of which will support organizations promoting privacy education and policy on the web. We will also do more to educate people about privacy controls specific to Buzz. The more people know about privacy online, the better their online experience will be.
Just to be clear, this is not a settlement in which people who use Gmail can file to receive compensation. Everyone in the U.S. who uses Gmail is included in the settlement, unless you personally decide to opt out before December 6, 2010. The Court will consider final approval of the agreement on January 31, 2011. This email is a summary of the settlement, and more detailed information and instructions approved by the court, including instructions about how to opt out, object, or comment, are available at http://www.BuzzClassAction.com.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
This mandatory announcement was sent to all Gmail users in the United States as part of a legal settlement and was authorized by the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.

Twitter introduces forced adds into user timelines. When you telecommute you have a boss, you have to follow their schedules and guidelines. When you freelance, you are in effect your own boss and no one but you can decide how much you work. Here are some tips on finding the best freelance job for you.

1. Freelance work takes time and perseverance. You will not check email one morning and have a million dollar contract offer. This next-generation head-up display is smart. Using a compact laser reflecting off transparent phosphors embedded in the windshield, it superimposes messages and graphics that could save your life.

Think of how useful a night-vision view projected onto your windshield could be. It can indicate children running toward the car, or point out approaching vehicles that are out of your field of vision. But the system’s overly helpful routine of graphically encircling speed limit signs might be overkill.

Don’t hold your breath, though. A GM R&D expert told DVICE, “If all worked well and field testing went as planned, we could possibly see this technology in a vehicle in 2017.”

SPOKANE MOBILE USERS and DEVELOPERS GROUP

SPOKANE MOBILE USERS and DEVELOPERS GROUP (Smudg)

Location: Twisp Café and Coffee House
(23505 E. So ensure that the product you choose is fully compatible with your existing hardware, Web server software and operating system. Most commerce servers support several operating systems, with UNIX and Windows NT being the most common, although some of the more mature products are available for UNIX only.

2. Ability to Import Existing Data: If you already have a large product database, you need the ability to transfer this data easily to your Web store’s database. Most high end packages provide several methods of importing data, but this feature is often missing from entry-level packages and so all data has to be manually entered.

3. APIs to Link to Legacy Applications: Linking your existing inventory management and finance systems to your commerce server is one of the most challenging aspects of setting up a Web store. If you intend to do this, APIs will allow programmers to write code that will link the commerce server with your legacy systems.

4. Virtual Shopping Carts: By far the most common shopping model on the Web, virtual shopping carts enable shoppers to browse through a store adding or removing items at will, before finally going to the “checkout” and paying for the goods.

5. Sales Tax and Shipping Cost Calculation: Often overlooked, this feature is a vital part of any good e-commerce software package. A significant proportion of orders in your Web store will come from international customers and shipping costs need to be calculated in real time. It is not good practice to simply include a note to the effect that international customers will have shipping costs notified to them by e-mail – customers want to know the total cost before placing their order. Select a solution that allows you to specify shipping costs with a great level of detail.

6. Range of Payment Methods Supported: Although the majority of payments in Web stores are made through traditional credit card transactions, you need to be in a position to accept payment in as many ways as possible in order to maximize your sales. Choose a solution that supports a wide range of electronic and traditional payment methods.

7. Construction Tools: Many e-commerce software solutions come with a number of standard store templates that can be readily customized, or include wizards to help build the store. It is much easier to create a store using these tools than it is to construct a store from scratch.

8. Special Promotion Management: Once your store is built, you need the ability to run special promotions. You should be able to quickly change a price or be able to offer discounts for volume purchases or to special customers.

9. Detailed Reporting: Often missing from entry-level packages, detailed reporting of customer activities in your store is vital. These reports will enable you to fine-tune your store in order to maximize sales.

10. Remote Administration: Finally, once the store is set up you want to be able to administer it easily. Some e-commerce solutions allow this to be done via any Web browser and incorporate features such as the ability to point and click at a product in order to change properties such as pricing.

5 Things to Consider Before Custom Software Development

1) Document your software requirements. The easiest way to fail on a custom software development project is to skip the requirements gathering process. If you want to build it right you need a concise blueprint of the features and functions to be included in the application. A quality software design will include documentation of each user interaction with the software (use cases), detailed information about all outputs from the software, and documentation on any interfaces that need to be addressed by the software.

2) Decide how the custom software will be used. Is the application intended for a broad audience that would be best served by an internet application or is it an internal application to be used by members connected to your local area network? If you have determined that you need an internal application you will still need to decide if you want a smart-client desktop application or a web based Intranet application. Desktop software tends to perform faster while browser based software is generally slower but does not require client software updates.

3) Determine if your software already exists. Do some research. Commercial Off The Shelf Software (COTS) has the advantage of being mass distributed and its cost is spread over many installations, so it is always a less expensive option than custom software development. If your requirements involve financial or accounting applications and you can’t find a COTS solution that addresses your needs then you should consider a base product that has an SDK (software development kit) like QuickBooks. Software development on this type of platform is very reliable and requires far less effort than a full custom software solution.

4) If you do need to build custom software, choose a database. There was a time when one might question the need for a database but that time has long passed. Quality free database offerings such as MSSQL Express, MySQL, and Oracle 10g Express, combined with the performance advantages of stored procedures, triggers, and referential integrity, make the database inclusion a must for any quality custom software application. You do, however, need to be careful when selecting the database, particularly if you are using one of the express databases as they do have limitations on number of databases, database size, and upward mobility.

5) Pick a platform / language. There are many schools of thought regarding the choice of Windows vs. Open Source (typically Linux) operating systems and their supported development languages. Some languages such as Java will run in both environments while others, such as .NET operate only on Windows platforms. In general, either choice can provide a reliable software environment providing careful attention is given to the capabilities of the language and its suitability for your chosen deployment environment.

Source
http://www.intsolgrp.com/wordpress/?p=8

Gravity Jack offers software development

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 254px; height: 159px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qnf37BQgqfU/SwdSXSkZtOI/AAAAAAAAAAc/3iE7TTXsdjQ/s320/Screen+shot+2009-11-20+at+6.36.38+PM.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5406380437756556514" />
11/18/2009 9:15:15 AM
By Splash Staff

A new software company recently set up shop in Liberty Lake - with some familiar faces in the local software field.

Gravity Jack started operations earlier this month in the TierPoint building, 23403 E. The notion is based on the simple concept that enabling the people around us to succeed—whether boss or employee—will achieve more in the long run for everyone.

I think Bob is onto something. A team-oriented perspective, instead of a me-oriented one, will accomplish more and teach us to work with others. Plus, if we learn to manage up, we will also learn to manage down. If we think about it another way, we will always have a boss, though we may not always have people report to us. So which is the more useful skill?

Just how can we do this? The blog post elaborates.

Lots more tips on leadership.

The 18 Mistakes That Kill Startups

October 2006

In the Q & A period after a recent talk, someone asked what made startups fail. After standing there gaping for a few seconds I realized this was kind of a trick question. It's equivalent to asking how to make a startup succeed—if you avoid every cause of failure, you succeed—and that's too big a question to answer on the fly.

Afterwards I realized it could be helpful to look at the problem from this direction. If you have a list of all the things you shouldn't do, you can turn that into a recipe for succeeding just by negating. And this form of list may be more useful in practice. It's easier to catch yourself doing something you shouldn't than always to remember to do something you should.

In a sense there's just one mistake that kills startups: not making something users want. If you make something users want, you'll probably be fine, whatever else you do or don't do. And if you don't make something users want, then you're dead, whatever else you do or don't do. So really this is a list of 18 things that cause startups not to make something users want. Nearly all failure funnels through that.

See the rest of the article http://www.paulgraham.com/startupmistakes.html

The secret to making money online

<noembed>
Share and annotate your videos
